Summer updates for the EverDrill team

It’s been a busy summer, and it’s hard to believe that autumn is here. EverDrill has been in the news, both preceding (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-39442450) and following (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-mid-wales-40430540) the premonsoon field season. We’ve been busy analysing the preliminary data collected during the fieldwork while we wait to revisit the drill sites this postmonsoon season.

Katie and Evan attended the International Glaciological Society’s British Branch Meeting in Lancaster in early September:

  • Katie presented MPhil work on identifying lake drainage events in Greenland by combining Landsat-8 and Sentinel-1 SAR data. This work was published in in Frontiers in Earth Sciences (Cryospheric Sciences) earlier this year (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feart.2017.00058/full).
  • Evan presented an analysis of supraglacial pond drainage events on Lirung Glacier (Langtang region of Nepal) based on his PhD work. This is a small part of a paper just published over the summer (http://journal.frontiersin.org/Journal/10.3389/feart.2017.00069/full) in Frontiers in Earth Sciences (Cryospheric Sciences).
  • We presented an EverDrill poster summarizing the 2017 fieldwork plans and initial outcomes from our April-June season (download as PDF). We can’t wait to see what the data reveal in autumn!

Katie wrote a blog post for the EGU Cryospheric Sciences blog about how little we know about the subsurface hydrology of high-elevation debris-covered glaciers, and how our hot-water drilling has the potential to improve this knowledge gap (http://blogs.egu.eu/divisions/cr/tag/debris-covered-glacier/). She also wrote a post for rockyglaciers.com about what a debris-covered glacier actually is (http://www.rockyglaciers.co.uk/understand/debriscovered.html).

As an AGU Editor, Bryn wrote an article for AGU’s Eos magazine (https://eos.org/editors-vox/hot-water-cold-ice). It’s a light, entertaining read, presenting the reality of conducting EverDrill fieldwork.
